Winged Wolf

International Tourism Fair 2022

Inside the Zapotec cosmovision, there are the Tonas and Nahuales which act as animal protectors and spiritual guides. From the beginning, the Tonas and Nahuales have been one of the main inspirations of Taller Jacobo y María Ángeles for their beautiful sculptures carved in the wood of the copal.

The craftsmen from San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca, carve the pieces with machetes, gouges, and knives for decorating them by hand later, using natural pigments like the anil or the grana cochinilla. Preserve this heritage knowledge and give continuity to their tradition.

In FITUR 2022, the workshop presents a fusion of a wolf with the wings of an eagle. Each symbol inside the piece has a meaning and all together tells a story.

On the one hand, the wolf is an animal that lives in herds, hunting collaboratively, it cares for and defends its own, and it organizes and shares. In the meantime, the eagle has a powerful view; flying high allows one to look at the landscape.

BOTH SPECIES ARE IN DANGER OF EXTINCTION.

Our society also is threatened by a pandemic and an imminent climate crisis. What can we do about it?

The wolf looking for a hummingbird’s rain shares with us a big knowledge that is the collaboration, mutual care, community, and the opening for a wealth of possibilities. To have a panoramic view in the long term to support us to get ahead. This piece represents hope.

THIS EXPOSITION INCLUDES THE VISION THAT OVER 27 YEARS JACOBO AND MARÍA
HAVE BUILT ON THREE AXES:

Decent livelihoods through trades, creating jobs; decreasing migration, and
reinforcing the pride and the roots of young people by their land.

Regarding the environment and sustainability of the business through reforestation and the
sovereignty alimentary (we continue planting native corn).

3. Development of young people through art, sport, and culture to crush the physical
and mental barriers.

All of this is based on traditional forms of organization as the Guelaguetza. Their work wants to be an inspiration to other communities, villages, and enterprises This piece is the result of the work of a team of more than 25 persons. It is a sample of how it can be perseverating the tradition but innovating at the same time.
