Jacobo & María Ángeles Workshop is pleased to present this splendid character on the facade of Casa de México en España. This fantastic creature has a body conformed by the face of a jaguar, an impressive beast, along with the legs and wings of an eagle, a formidable predator. This critter is crowned by two small quetzals: birds of goodness and abundance.
This is how this magnificent fusion is conceived: Eagle’s symbolism from Zapotec wisdom is inferred as the spiritual power, and it stands out the qualities of courage, fearlessness, strength, will and even sacrifice, are combined with the earthly power of the jaguar, creature of warrior character, which highlights the values of agility, strategy and discipline. Quetzals, on the other hand, are a symbol that has been recognized as a mirror of Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent of the Mesoamerican culture since pre-Hispanic times, , whose sighting has been venerated for bringing with it the growth of flowers in spring. This composition as a trinity of elements – eagle, jaguar and quetzal – enhances us with endless values that will lead us on our earthly path.

The purpose of this piece is to aesthetically configure the facade of a precinct whose ultimate goal is to honor and exalt the culture of a country such as Mexico, in a multicultural context that has resulted in syncretism and miscegenation. It is important to recover the syncretic value of this emblem in the conceptualization of this work, as it seeks to make visible those qualities that constitute Casa de México en España.
This piece is located on the portal where one enters a distinguished space; threshold where visitors, workers, and all those dedicated to evoke the vitality of this cultural precinct pass through. This prestigious building is honored and protected by a mystical beast and two precious quetzal companions, and we consider that it functions itself as a portal to Mexico in Spain.
The intervention to the façade was carried out through the installation of hand-decorated wooden plaques, in addition to an application of precious Spanish carnations in certain details, which with their pristine pigment in reddish tones, accompanies the colorimetry of this monumental piece that welcomes spring.
Finally, this hallucinating figure greets us with its outstretched wings, whose plumage, like flowers, welcomes the passage of those of us who will be, very honorably, part of the reciprocity in the habitation of this room that welcomes us all allegorically with open arms and open hearts.
